Turntablism is the art of using the turntable as a musical tool. Scratch DJs incorporate turntablism and provide an exciting element to DJing. THINK YOU CAN DJ would not be as diverse without that hip hop element.
We bring in the world's greatest scratch DJs to give honor to Hip Hop and to showcase the extraordinary skills that go into cutting. We feel that all DJs will be stronger artists by learning five scratch techniques and the art of beat-juggling. We hope to inspire you to practice them!
Music makers have a special perspective on mixing tracks because they create singles from samples and/ or recorded instruments. This insight of how the song is produced helps them judge our contestants.
At times the contestants will be mixing the judge's songs making the evaluation even more critical.

(Turntablist DISK):
One of the foremost innovators of Scratching, (and the creator of the word "Turntablist") DISK not only remains one of the most technically soulful impressive Skratch Musicians in the world today, he has also single-handedly expanded the musical sensibility of Skratching, allowing for a instrument that was traditionally relegated to the background of Hip Hop, to be re-considered as a powerful and modern tool of musical expression. If Jazz has its Miles Davis, then Hip Hop has its DISK. Born in San Francisco in the 1970's DJ DISK first discovered the idea of Turntablism by manipulating an old wooden turntable consul in his parents living room. DISK continued his exploration with his "instrument" and by the age of 11 was competing in SF DJ Battles and was considered a rising star throughout the then rapidly rising underground San Francisco Hip Hop scene.
